Current Research Projects
I am currently working on three major global research projects, all of which lie at the intersection of political economy and international security. My current book project aims to translate my article The Long Jihad into a full-length manuscript. This work involves field studies in multiple conflict zones affected by jihadist insurgencies and robust criminal economies.
I am also involved in a major SSHRC-funded interdisciplinary research project on famine mitigation in the Horn of Africa, which focuses specifically on local interventions that improve chances of human survival in periods of extreme drought. The case study for this project is Somalia. Prospective graduate students who have experience with climate change, widespread famine, and violent conflict may wish to reach out to me about possible supervision on these subjects.
I have many additional smaller projects, which are too numerous to list here. Prospective PhD students who are interested in international security, climate change, civil war, jihadist insurgencies, and famine are welcome to list me a potential supervisor in their applications.
